Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) can extract, cite and recommend it. It complements SEO: SEO wins the click, GEO wins the citation.

How it works

Answer engines favour clear definitions, FAQ-structured Q&A, schema.org markup, and crawlable plain-text corpora (robots allowances, llms.txt). They cite sources they can parse confidently.

Why it matters

A growing share of research happens inside AI assistants that never show ten blue links. If you aren't citable, you're invisible in that channel — regardless of your Google rank.

How Autocloz handles it

Autocloz's own site is built GEO-first: AI-crawler allowances, llms.txt + llms-full.txt corpora, FAQPage/Article/Breadcrumb schema on every template, and answer-style glossary pages like this one.

FAQ

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap but optimize for different surfaces: SEO ranks pages in search results; GEO makes content extractable and citable by AI answer engines. Doing both captures search clicks and AI citations.

How do I make a site citable by LLMs?

Publish clear definitions and FAQs, add schema.org structured data, allow AI crawlers in robots, and ship an llms.txt / llms-full.txt corpus so engines can ground on your content.
